FEATURING THE AFRO-COLOMBIAN ALL STARS: The King Elio Boom- “El Halcon”- Justo Valdez & Son Palenque- Monsieur Boogaloo- DJ Chawala- Kussima Soukous Créole Band and many more...
The original sound track from thre movie “Les Rois Créoles de la Champeta” (”The Creole Kings of Champeta”) is produced by La Huit Production (France), Palenque Records (Colombia) and Cumbe Records (Venezuela).
PALENQUE RECORDS- the 100% Afro-Colombian label, exclusively presents this compilation of CHAMPETA or TERAPIA CREOLE (CREOLE THERAPY). Being the new, african-based rhythm from the Colombian carribean, the Champeta is one of the mos ät inventive forms of popular music of our time. Amongst the European public, it is also the least well known.
Thirty years ago, a few sailors brought the first African records to the Colombian, carribean coast of Cartagena. Since then, like a seed that takes to fertile soil which has long been in wait, African popular music has taken root to be reborn. Afro- Colombians have fused it with their own drum rhythms and thus, have given it all the savour of latin music.
Champeta, the explosive mix of Soukous, Mbaqanga and Highlife, combined with the burning vibrations of the carribean (Rap-Ragga-Reggae, Haitian Compas, Socca and Calypso), is the new , musical cocktail that’s possessed the giant Sound-Systems of the Black villages. Each year, about thirty Afro-Colombian artists come together to battle for the title of “King of Champeta” during legendary, musical challenges sponsored by Sound-Systems as fierce and powerful as those found in Jamaica.
This compilation is a show case of the greatest sucess stories that have rocked the history of this new, musical style like the famous hit “La Turbina” by Elio Boom which sold more than 80 000 copies throughout the Carribean. This music has hit hard- taking over Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and other islands where it reigns supreme amongst even the pickiest dancers.
For this album, PALENQUE RECORDS, called in MC IBA, a DJ, musicologist and one of the best trained “ears” on the Parisian scene. He was responsible for the superb compilation “HIGHLIFE:1960’S MUSIC FROM THE GOLD COAST (NDCD 025)”, on the NIGHT & DAY label in 1996. With this musical work, MC IBA has widened his scope o ˚f action and is now investigating new music from the Afro-Carribean community.
With JUMP-UP, Jamacain DUB and RAPSO from Trinidad, the Champeta is at the head of the most revolutionary, musical trends of our time.
Africain rhythms from the world over mixed with the rhythms from our Colombian carribean have met in Cartagena in order to be transformed into this new, afro-punk groove; a magnificent synthesis of non-stop, musical “back and forths” between Africa and the Black America’s.
